How to Have a Happy, Healthy Vagina over the HolidaysšŸŽ„ā­

There’s a little snow sparkling on the ground here in Wyoming and I’m thinking about the bustling holiday weeks ahead. And surprise, surprise, I’m thinking about your vagina and hoping she survives the upcoming madness!

Let’s face it, as much as we love the holidays, they can wreak havoc on our delicate flower.

Yes, she’s rugged. She’s bad-ass. But she also takes the fall for all of our over-indulgent and less-than-enlightened choices. Which can abound this time of year. Choices like:

1 – Diet – Sugar, alcohol, dairy, gluten (and sometimes eggs)
So basically egg nog, Santa’s cookies and that glass or two of bubbly, which are so tasty and fun in the moment, can cause a vaginal nightmare for a lot of women in the following days.

How? By throwing our fragile vaginal microbiome out of balance through the gut/vagina axis (yup…it’s a thang!). According to Classical Chinese Medicine, this can create conditions of damp and damp-heat, which are the perfect conditions for yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis (BV), altered pH, and other types of imbalance. By the way, this dysbiosis can happen in places other than the vagina, too! Think: eczema flare, rashes, etc/

2 – Stress – Seeing family and friends, even if you love them.
This is one of the pieces most women miss. Stress can quickly spark a cascade of reactions in the body, no matter how ā€œcleanā€ our diet may be. And stress hormones, whether they’re too high or simply out of whack, can directly affect our vaginal microbiome’s fragile ecosystem.

3 – It goes without saying but … the Holidays can be stressful! There’s the physical stress of traveling and staying up later than normal. ButĀ  there’s also those emotional stresses we love to sweep under the rug. Honestly, people pleasing is really stressful and hard on the body. Maybe you’re trying to keep the peace in the family or friend group. Or trying to play the old role of who you used to be, which no longer aligns with who you’ve grown into. Whether it’s a blowup or biting your tongue, it can be stressful, draining, or downright brutal. We love this quote from Ram Dass…

4 – Sleep – Not getting enough sleep, unrestful sleep, or out of sync circadian rhythms.
Yes indeed, changes in your sleep schedule can monkey around with that beautiful vaginal balance. Of course, during the holidays, it’s usually not JUST a change in sleep – it’s lack of sleep accompanied by partying, drinking too much, or unabashed indulging. (No judgement! We’ve been there.)

Even changing one or two things in our diet can affect our sleep quality quite a bit, contributing to the overall biochemical frenzy. It’s just NOT fun at all when one slip up ruins a good night’s sleep … but hey, it happens!

5 – Sex – There’s something about the holidays…
It seems like during this dark time of year, the idea of jumping into someone’s loving arms, especially after a little spiked cider or other intoxicants, is especially tempting. Maybe it’s an old flame or your high school sweetheart who you haven’t seen in years … or maybe it’s someone new. Somehow all rational thought goes out the window!

Whether you have a good or bad experience, the fact of the matter is, you might be left with a vaginal microbiome outta balance. They sure don’t show that part in Christmas romance movies – that vaginal microbiome hangover 1-2 days later!
