I fell in love with Katherine when my friend recommended that I check out her historical hair care videos. I was so excited to just see this incredibly curious woman explore for herself how she could improve her own hair. One of the coolest parts is that her inspiration came from her keen focus on historical clothing. Katherine Niven is the content creator for Katherine Sewing and Katherine in Real Life on YouTube. On the Katherine Sewing channel she shares all manner of instruction and exploration into historical clothing. She has done some really fun deep dives into corsetry (listen to the podcast to see how that actually relates to women’s health) and even shoe making! Katherine allows her curiosity to drive her creativity. She is really unhindered by how to make it happen, she just dives in.
And so she did as it related to her hair care. Katherine is pretty inspirational as she also is the mother of FIVE children. The youngest, was only months old at the time of the interview and is now just over a year. I know you will love meeting Katherine and exploring our wide ranging topics from moving from the city to country life, her big move, her life long connection with creating, being Katherine in Real Life and all that she has learned along the way with her historical hair care exploration which grew her hair from chin length to now well past her hips and it’s gorgeous, did I mention that? She does not use shampoo, but uses her own special hair oil formula which is now available to purchase!
I continue to follow Katherine and obtain continual inspiration from her work. What I truly love is that she sort of took her questioning about her hair care and faced a very potent conventional advertising industry that basically says we “should” be washing our hair every day or we are gross, greasy and disgusting and found her own intuitive guidance that was questioning the logic since historical women were having so much greater success in growing their hair. It’s a story of “bucking” the system and following what I would call her own womb wisdom.
And guess what, people – it WORKS! Slowly I stopped washing my hair regularly. At first I could only go for every 2-3 days, but gradually have worked up to a week at a time. My hair is not curly and was not thick when I started. I have fine and lightly wavy hair and it was quite thin, dry and broken when I started. But several years later now, it is noticeably thicker and not dry and brittle but strong and healthy.
I hadn’t tried her clay washing method until recently, but now I am a fan of that as well. I am still working out the kinks in how I utilize the clay…I feel like after putting on her hair oil and letting that sit, it was hard to get the oil out of my hair with just the clay and so I washed it with a very basic neutral shampoo that I like by Nutribiotic. But then I applied the clay afterward. I let it sit and then washed it out. I could feel it still coating the strands and strengthening them, which I liked a lot. It made my hair thicker too. So I am still playing with this new aspect.
